A Brief History of Real Estate Management in Nigeria

To get to the root of the history of real estate in Nigeria, we need to understand what real estate means. The term “real estate” is all-encompassing. It doesn’t just mean landed properties and land, it also implies everything on the earth’s surface, above the sky, and below the ground.

The history of real estate management practice in Nigeria goes all the way back to the middle ages, long before the colonization of Nigeria by Great Britain. Real estate history started that far back because our forefathers had lands, hamlets, and farms and took care of them for their own benefit. These properties were then being inherited by their wives and children after they were gone.

Some people leased their homes to people for money, and people with more than one land sold the others for money. This practice led to the certification of the real estate profession. Humans gradually abandoned the hunter-gatherer way of life (which is still active in some parts today) to settle on fertile lands. Claims were made on the basis of might is right before a system of government and leaders developed to control the distribution of lands.

Today, we’ve evolved into a more sophisticated approach to land ownership. Wars to seize lands and shift boundaries in one’s favor are few — they still happen. We live in better days, however. But that also gave rise to a smart approach to owning and selling real estate.
